A High Quality Product that Works Well
This product consists of two separate items: a six foot optical fiber (also known as TOSLINK or digital audio) cable with standard size connectors on both ends and a mini optical adaptor. Either end of the cable snaps firmly into the large end of the adaptor. The smaller end of the adaptor is nearly the same size and shape as a standard 3.5 mm. headphone jack, but the adaptor will not work in a standard headphone jack - it fits into a mini-optical output found in some laptop computers and portable digital audio equipment. Thus, this product can transmit a 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound digital audio signal from a smaller portable device to a larger audio system. The cable itself can work as a stand-alone product connecting two devices with standard size digital audio connections or, combined with the adaptor, connecting one device with a standard size connector and another with a mini optical output. The cable is lightweight and flexible and this product should be easy to pack for travel.Like other Belkin products, this item appears to be a high quality product that performs well. My only reservation relates to its price of about $18 (as of the date of this review.) A cable and adaptor that should give comparable performance can be purchased as separate items at Amazon for less.

Great Cable, Could Use Second Adapter
One thing is clear when it comes to enjoying quality music (or any audio) on your home stereo system or any quality speaker system: Analog audio cables simply don't deliver the clarity, crispness, and depth that a digital optical audio cable can deliver. Honestly, I have tested listening to music from my Apple TV to my home theatre system with red/white analog cables delivering the sound and then with the digital optical cable connection, the difference is clear. You're putting the full quality audio into your A/V receiver or other sound system unit, therefore not relying on the cheaper sound processing unit in the player to decode the audio and convert it to audio for you, it makes a difference. Some devices you might use this for would be getting optical audio out of a set-top TV box to your stereo, sound bar, A/V receiver, etc. Anything with an optical input you can put sound into with this and anything with an optical output, you can take sound out of from this. The neat feature with this cable is that it includes an adapter for the mini optical connections. Not too many devices use that mini connection, but there are a few, such as Apple computers. Some Apple computers like Mac Mini or iMac, certain generations, have both analog and optical audio come out of the same audio out port (the computer detects what time of cable is plugged in). The adapter included with the cable lets you take sound from such "mini" sources. I also have an old iPod Hi-Fi Speaker that actually uses the mini adapter for the input of sound. That is why in some rare cases, you might actually have wished Belkin included a mini adapter for both ends of the cable if both devices, input and output, used the mini connector.Oh, another device that uses mini optical output is the Apple Airpot Express to stream audio. Overall, there might be some cheaper cables out there, but Belkin attempts to bring you some versatility with the product by including the mini adapter. The versatility would have been enhanced had they included two adapters. Good product, but there might be cheaper alternatives.

Typical Belkin Quality
One of the challenges of the Vine program sometimes is evaluating extremely rudimentary products. While some of us may posses testing and measuring equipment that enables them to accurately measure throughput, bandwidth and other hard statistics, I am left giving you my simple direct impressions as a consumer. And with cables, it is ever so.The Belkin Digital Optical Cable is similar to many others I have seen, but has a few differences that give it that nice Belkin touch. The cable seems a bit thinner and more flexible than other fiber cables I have used, and is flat black instead of the usual glossy. The terminations have raised gray bubbles on the plugs for a nice solid grip.A somewhat difficult to remove but extremely easy to lose plastic bulb covers the business ends. It also comes with a mini-optical end, for me, another recently adopted (to me) form of connection. I have not yet seen one in service, but I assume it will soon become ubiquitous. The enclosed mini adapter is also rather diminutive and looks extremely easy to lose. I intend to keep the box which has a lovely little berth for the adapter when it is not in service. If you decide on this product, I advise that you use it or lose it!
